An elephant seen in profile, its wise, watchful eye the focal point of the composition. Within its face and trunk a mountain landscape opens up, with dark peaks, pine trees and a few small birds in flight. The palette is reduced to black, grey and white, and dark drips run down the lower part of the paper. The mood is quiet, weighty and contemplative.
